Brazilian Popular Music (known as MPB) is a Brazilian musical genre that emerged in 1966 with the second generation of Bossa Nova. It was a fusion of two divergent musical movements: Bossa Nova and the folk engagement of the Popular Culture Centers of the National Union of Students, the former advocating musical sophistication and the latter fidelity to Brazilian roots music.
Later, MPB began to encompass other mixtures of rhythms such as rock, soul, and samba, giving rise to a style known as samba-rock; and the mixture of Latin music influenced by reggae and samba, giving rise to a genre known as samba-reggae.
In Brazilian Popular Music (MPB), a variety of instruments are used to create its sound richness. The guitar is one of the most notable, while the cavaquinho provides a rhythmic base in styles like choro and samba. Percussion, with instruments like pandeiro and surdo, is essential for complex rhythms. Flutes and wind instruments like saxophone and trumpet add melody and color. Keyboards and pianos provide harmonies and textures. The diversity of instruments reflects the variety of styles and influences in MPB, making it one of the most distinct and rich forms of Brazilian music.
